Learn More About the Nature Bowl

What is the Nature Bowl?
It is a cooperative learning team competition for 3rd through 6th grade students. Questions and activities focus on regional environmental science and issues, correlating with the State Science Framework.

The Nature Bowl serves to reinforce concept comprehension, introduce new information, and motivate students and teachers to further study. Classes become involved in the conservation of natural resources, and in understanding local environmental issues.

How It Works
Teams of 3 to 6 students participate in two divisions: 3rd-4th, and 5th-6th grades. Only 3 students participate in any one round, with no more than one team per division representing an individual school.

Each half-day of activates stress teamwork, creativity and critical thinking. Any child is a potential participant for the Nature Bowl.

The competitive aspect of the event is deemphasized so all students feel comfortable, achieve success in learning and enjoy the activities.

Activities
Semi-finals will be held in early 1999 at each of the sponsoring sites. Timed rounds at the semi-finals include:
  • Nature Investigations - teams solve outdoor questions.
  • Team Questions - teams answer hands-on challenges that stress critical thinking and cooperative learning.
  • Enviromercial - prior to the event, each child prepares a one-minute commercial on a local problem or issue.
  • Bellringer Questions - short answer; individuals answer questions.
  • Problem Solving Dilemmas - Teams debate on contemporary issues.
  • Wild Card- games or other activities that change annually.
Top scoring teams from each grade level continue on to the finals.
Coaching A Team
Teachers, parents and principals can serve as coaches. The coaching workshop will introduce the Nature Bowl format and give suggestions for incorporating and improving environmental education in classroom activities.
  • While the amount of time varies with coaches, the average time spent preparing a team seems to be 1.5 hours per week, after a team has been selected.
